After the First World War, Great Britain had a strong aviation industry that supplied the RAF and the growing civil aviation with excellent aircraft, engines, and equipment. One of the leading companies was Hawker Aircraft Limited (until 1933. it was called H.G. Hawker Engineering Co.) which very successfully marketed its excellent aircraft to British aviation as a whole as well as to many world air forces. The leading construction engineer at Hawker was Sydney Camm, who was directly "responsible" for the creation of many famous aircraft, including the Fury, Hind, and Hurricane, famous aircraft to which we are very tightly attached. Two of these three mentioned planes (Fury and Hurricane) were once the backbone of the VVKJ fighter aircraft and were produced under license in our factories. All three aircraft actively participated in the April War of 1941, when they defended their homeland from a far superior opponent with the Kosovo Cross on their wings. In the book, Hawker - The Yugoslav Story (Operational Record 1931-1941), the author Aleksandar M. Ognjević expertly presents a complete story on 196 pages in twelve chapters regarding the acquisition of the Furies, Hinds, and Hurricanes, their production and use in the VVKJ from their arrival to end of operational use. Each plane has an excellent and rich description with testimonials of the pilots and other actors and their experiences in flying and maintaining both in peacetime and wartime, which gives this book a special significance. Furthermore, each chapter has a great set of high-quality photos and illustrations, some of which were published for the first time. For modelers and aviation enthusiasts, Chapter 12 is especially interesting, which deals with camouflage schemes and markings on these three planes during their entire service in the VVKJ, as well as in other air forces which have several Furies and Hurricanes as war booties or from purchasing. Excellent color profiles that contribute to the richness of this book are the work from the proven author Dragan Šaler.
Books like this are more than welcome because we find a lot of important information from our history (aviation and general) in them, which have been cut off for a long time due to political blindness or passion. On the other hand, future generations have to receive a quality source of information about this part of our aviation history that has been very dynamic in every way. I warmly recommend the book and freely claim that it will not leave anyone indifferent.
